Removals in Poole, from Sandbanks to Canford Heath
1st Choice Removals provides home removals across Poole, from harbourside flats in Sandbanks and Lilliput to family homes in Upton, Canford Heath and Hamworthy. We are a family-run company based just north of Poole on Magna Road, and we have been moving Poole households since 1990.
Local removals across every part of Poole
Poole covers the BH12 to BH17 postcode districts, and each one has its own character. We are based just over the Canford Magna boundary, so Poole is very much part of our local patch.
- BH12: Branksome, Alderney, Upper Parkstone and Newtown
- BH13: Canford Cliffs, Sandbanks and Branksome Park
- BH14: Lower Parkstone, Ashley Cross, Lilliput and Penn Hill
- BH15: Poole town centre, the Old Town, Hamworthy, Longfleet and Oakdale
- BH16: Upton, Turlin Moor and the Lytchetts
- BH17: Canford Heath, Creekmoor and Waterloo
Broadstone (BH18) has its own page.
Poole neighbourhoods: what to expect on moving day
Every part of Poole brings its own access questions, and we cover them all at the free home visit.
- Sandbanks and Lilliput (BH13, BH14): many apartments with shared car parks, lifts and building rules, and steep, narrow roads around Lilliput and Evening Hill. We confirm lift bookings and where the lorry can stand before the day.
- Canford Cliffs and Branksome Park (BH13): larger detached homes, long gravel drives and some private or unmade roads. We check turning space and how close the lorry can get at the home visit.
- Parkstone, Ashley Cross and Penn Hill (BH12, BH14): Victorian and Edwardian terraces and semis, hilly streets and busy on-street parking. Narrow hallways and stairs mean we measure sofas, wardrobes and beds in advance.
- Poole town centre, the Quay and the Old Town (BH15): narrow streets, pedestrianised stretches and modern harbourside flats. These moves are planned around loading points and quieter times of day.
- Hamworthy (BH15): the quickest routes from the town centre cross the Poole Bridge or the Twin Sails Bridge, which both lift for boats. We plan the route and allow for bridge openings so they don't hold up your move.
- Upton, Canford Heath, Creekmoor and Oakdale (BH15–BH17): mostly family homes with driveways, garages and lofts. Here the work is about volume and careful room-by-room labelling.
Flats and apartments: lifts, stairs and car parks
A large share of Poole moves involve flats, especially around the harbour, Sandbanks, Canford Cliffs, Lilliput and the Quay. These moves are all about planning access.
- We check lift size, weight limits and whether the lift can be reserved
- We look at how far the vehicle can park from the entrance, including underground or gated car parks
- We protect communal hallways, lifts and stairwells as well as your own flat
- Large sofas, glass tables and wardrobes are measured against doors and landings before the day
Building managers often want notice of a move, so it helps to tell them as soon as you have a date.
Moving around the harbour and the Old Town
Poole's Old Town and the Quay have narrow streets, some pedestrianised stretches and tight corners. Hamworthy is reached over the lifting bridges, which can hold up traffic when they open for boats, so we build that into the plan.
Parking in Poole is managed by BCP Council. Where a street has permit bays, yellow lines or heavy demand, we will tell you at the survey if the vehicle needs space reserved, and help you arrange it.
The roads onto the Sandbanks peninsula get very busy on summer days, so we plan timings around that wherever the move allows.
Family homes in Upton, Canford Heath and Parkstone
Away from the water, much of Poole is family housing. Canford Heath, Creekmoor and Oakdale have large estates of 1970s and 1980s homes, while Upton, Hamworthy and Parkstone mix older semis, terraces and bungalows.
These moves are usually about volume: garages, lofts, sheds and children's rooms. Our crew packs and loads room by room so everything arrives labelled for the right room.
If you are running out of time, our packing service can handle the whole house or just the kitchen and fragile items. Unpacking and furniture dismantling and reassembly are optional extras, charged on top.
A real Poole move: Canford Cliffs to Branksome Chine
We moved a couple from a ground-floor flat in Canford Cliffs to a second-floor flat near Branksome Chine. The job included glass tables, artwork and a grandfather clock, plus dismantling and rebuilding bunk beds.
We protected the communal areas in both buildings as well as the flats themselves. Read the full Canford Cliffs home move story.
When to book your Poole removal
Fridays, the end of the month and the summer holidays are the busiest times for house moves, because that is when most completions and tenancies fall. If your date is fixed, book your free home visit as soon as you have an idea of timing. We can always adjust the date once your completion is confirmed.
If you can be flexible, a midweek move is usually easier to book. Around Sandbanks and the beaches, summer weekends bring heavy traffic, so we plan timings around it wherever the move allows.
If your completion slips or your new home isn't ready, we can collect on the day and keep everything in containerised storage until you are ready, without handling your belongings twice.
Moving checklist for Poole
A few local jobs are easy to forget when you move within, into or out of Poole:
- Council tax: Poole is in the BCP Council area (Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole). Tell BCP Council your moving date so your account is closed or moved correctly.
- Parking permits: if you have a resident or visitor parking permit, update it with BCP Council for your new address.
- Bins and recycling: check the collection days at your new address, and book a bulky waste collection early if you are clearing out large items before the move.
- Schools: if you are changing schools within the BCP area, in-year applications go through BCP Council.
- Building rules for flats: let your building manager or managing agent know your moving date, and ask about lift bookings, protection and permitted hours.
- Parking for the lorry: if your street is busy or has restrictions, ask us at the survey whether space needs reserving.

We are a family-run company based on Magna Road, just north of Poole, and have been moving local households since 1990.
Do you offer free home visits in Poole?

One of our moving consultants looks at your belongings, stairs, lifts and parking, and it usually takes around 20 to 30 minutes. It is free, with absolutely no obligation. Get a quote and we will book your free home visit.
Do you come out to see my home before quoting?
Yes, if you live in our area. We visit every local home to see what's involved, even when you're moving a long way, such as to another part of the UK or abroad. If you're moving to us from outside our area, where we can't visit, we survey your home over a video call instead. Both are free, with no obligation.
Can you move me into or out of a flat in Sandbanks or Canford Cliffs?
Yes, flat moves are a large part of our work in Poole. We check lift size, stairs, parking and any building rules before the day, and protect communal areas as well as your flat. You can read about a real flat-to-flat move from Canford Cliffs to Branksome Chine in our case studies.
Do I need to arrange parking for a removal lorry in Poole?
It depends on the street. Parking in Poole is managed by BCP Council, and busy roads, permit zones and the Old Town may need space reserved for the vehicle. Many homes in Canford Heath, Upton and Creekmoor have driveways and need nothing. We assess parking at the survey and tell you if anything needs arranging.
How much does it cost to move house in Poole?
We quote every move individually rather than publishing prices. The cost depends on the volume of belongings, access at both ends, distance and any packing or storage you need. After a free home visit you receive a written quote by email, which you can accept online. Get a quote or call 01202 570970. Our guide to what decides the cost of a removal explains more.
Can you store my belongings between Poole house moves?
Yes. We have around 1,000 storage units across four local sites and use containerised storage, so your belongings are packed into a sealed container at your home and not handled again until delivery. Storage can be for a few days between completions or longer term while you renovate or look for the right home.
Can you move me from Poole to another part of the UK or abroad?
Yes. As well as local moves, we move Poole households anywhere in the UK and to Europe and worldwide destinations including France, Spain, Australia and the USA. We survey, plan and manage the move, with trusted partner removal firms carrying out European transport and partner agents handling customs clearance and delivery at worldwide destinations. For shipping abroad, marine insurance must be arranged by you directly, and we explain this clearly when we quote.
How far ahead should I book a removal in Poole?
As early as you can, especially for a Friday, the end of the month or the school holidays, when most completions happen. Book your free home visit once you have a rough idea of timing. We can confirm or move the date when your completion is agreed.
Can you get a removal lorry to a Sandbanks or Lilliput apartment?
Usually, yes. At the home visit we check where the vehicle can stand, the lift size and any building rules, and we book the lift and agree loading times with the building manager where needed. If access is tight, we tell you at the home visit and plan the move around it.
Will the Hamworthy bridges delay my move?
They can, because the Poole Bridge and the Twin Sails Bridge both lift for boats. We plan the route for any move to or from Hamworthy and allow for bridge openings, so they don't throw out your day.
Do you dismantle and reassemble furniture in Poole?
Yes. Dismantling and reassembling beds, wardrobes and other furniture is available as an optional extra, charged on top, and we include it in your written quote if you need it.
